One of my friends decided to buy an EX485 after seeing everything I'm doing with mine (mostly collecting then streaming pictures, movies, and music). I was at his house this weekend trying to help him set it up, but we kept running into an issue setting up the Remote Access.

He purchased the Linksys WRT400N with the EX485. This is one of Linksys' newest N routers and it is UPnP capable. Strangely, the setup wizard fails on the UPnP step. I've confirmed that UPnP is enabled on the router. I'd rather not resort to manual port forwarding since this is a new router with UPnP.

I have a WRT610N, which the wizard was able to setup without a hitch. You would think a newer Linksys router would work as well.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

This is a common problem with LinkSys devices. LinkSys does something funky with the UPnP implementation. I had a WRT600 N that would not auto configure. I have since moved to a D-Link DIR-855 and the auto configure works great.

There are two main things that need to be done to hand configure the router. Both these items are Port Forwarding schemes (SSL and RDP, if memory serves) that you mus manual enter for the router.

I will look up the ports and amend this post with more detail tonight when I am at home and can look up the info.

My DLink DIR-655 doesn't work with UPnP either. It's just eh way it is. You have to manually forward the ports on the router and windows firewall if you have that turned on. It should take no time at all.

I am new to this forum, so please forgive me if this does not apply for you. You might want to look at your PPPoe settings. I had a similar issue with Linksys routers and then I realized I had not set my PPPoe correctly (I was running on default values, and I was surprised my internet connection was actually working at all). Once I entered my ISP correct values and tried the UPnP it worked right away. (Just a thought)

Thanks.  Do you have DSL or Cable Modem?  Also, does correcting PPPoe settings help with internal traffic (inside your LAN), or just external (remote access)?  Thanks again.

Ok, I just read up on PPPoe...seems like it's just for DSL.  I have cable modem.

Is the problem here an indication that the installation failed or is it a failed installation? Do any of the "local" functions fail, the Connector, Folder Sharing, etc.? Have you actually tried Remote Access from another location, from a library or from your home, rather than trying to test it from your friend's house?

Some ISPs and some routers will not allow "loopback" and, as a result, the MSS tests fail when in reality the functionality is fine.

The Remote Access setup wizard fails (claiming it's an issues with UPnP), and afterward I cannot access the URL that we configured with TZO. Folder sharing seems to work, as does the media collector. It is only on the Remote Access that doesn't configure correctly.

If you try Remote Access locally, using the internal IP address (192.168.1.xxx) does it work?

If YES you will probably get some quick support by calling TZO. They're great!

I bought the Linksys WRT400N at the same time as my HP LX195. UPnP does not work. I have manually configured the ports on the router. I am now able to get to the HP MediaSmart Server Home page (with icons for HP Photo Publisher, HP Photo Viewer, Web Media Streamer, Access Files on Server, and Computer Access). Unfortunately, I can get no further. When I click on one of the icons, Internet Explorer v8.0 gives me an "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message. This happens whether I am accessing it within the LAN or outside my home via the Internet.
I am able to browse my server's files while on my home network after entering my user password into the HP MediaSmart Server. Remote Access seems to be the only thing not working (besides UPnP with the router) at this point. What am I doing wrong?
